Tips for Work-at-Home Parents with Young Children

Many people are working from home these days. While working from home provides flexibility, parents with young children can often find themselves distracted. There are ways, though, that you can create a balance between work and home life. LJ Pregnancy Co encourages you to read on for some tips.
Set Up Your Workspace
First, set up your workspace in an area with minimal distractions. You should be able to close the door and work in peace. Make sure you have everything you need in your workspace so that you can avoid going into other parts of the house and getting bombarded by the kids. Keep your supplies and files well-organized, too, and get comfortable with a quality desk and office chair.
Keep Your Home Clean
It’s no secret that working from home can be a challenge, especially when you have kids. In addition to the usual distractions, you also have to worry about keeping your house clean and tidy. Unfortunately, clutter and uncleanliness can cause stress and anxiety, which can make it even harder to focus on work. Additionally, a messy house can be hazardous for young children, who are more likely to trip and fall. As a result, it’s important to take the time to keep your home clean and orderly, both for your own sanity and for the safety of your family. A little bit of effort now will pay off in the long run.
Continue to Prioritize Your Kids
When you work from home, it’s easy to let work take over. You can’t leave it at the office. So you have to prioritize. Set a schedule for work, and stick to it. Fit in plenty of quality time with your kids so that you won’t feel pressure to squeeze them in while working. You could read a bedtime story each evening, have the kids help you with chores in the kitchen, or plan special activities like a movie or sporting evening that everyone can look forward to. Also, take the time to help your kids with homework and to work with little ones to give them a head start on learning.
Keep the Kids Occupied
Each week, plan some activities to keep your kids occupied while you work. Older kids might get started on crafts, puzzles, and games that don’t require a lot of supervision. For toddlers, focus on toys that encourage imaginative play. Toy kitchen sets or building blocks can hold a child’s attention for a long time.
Find Support
Depending on your kids’ ages, they may need some supervision while you work, so develop a support network to help you. You might ask your kids’ grandparents to help with care during your working hours or hire a babysitter if necessary. This will give you some uninterrupted time to get tasks accomplished. Work out a plan with your spouse, too, to split up household chores and child care.
Be Your Own Boss
Finally, if you’re currently working for a company, you might consider becoming your own boss instead. You’ll still be able to work from home, but you’ll be more flexible to adjust your schedule to family obligations. Choose a business that suits your skills and talents, and make use of online tools and templates to help you write a business plan, build a website, and start marketing. You can use a free online logo maker to design your company’s logo, for instance. Even a novice can select a template and add text and colors for a unique result.
Work Well From Home
You can work well from your home even if you have young children by focusing on setting up your workspace, prioritizing your children, keeping the kids occupied, and finding support. Just remember that while you want to keep your young children occupied, you also want to spend as much time with them as possible.
