I am writing this post to spread awareness of what I / We, went through at the beginning of December.
I had 4 positive pregnancy tests at the beginning of November 2022, we were so happy, so excited, and everything was falling into place perfectly, Arabella couldn’t wait to be a big sister and we would have been expecting our second baby Lindsay at the end of July 2023 …..
It wasn’t long until I didn’t feel too well (around 4 weeks), I had period pain, (I put it down to my body being different the second time round being pregnant, so I ignored it) I had severe sickness that lasted all day, I couldn’t eat properly, I had no energy, I felt so so poorly for weeks (but we just thought, maybe we’re having a boy?) … Every pregnancy is different I suppose?!! …
At around 5 weeks pregnant, I had light spotting, I was so scared, we went to urgent care to be told everything was fine, I was still testing pregnant and that it was probably implantation bleeding. This spotting kept happening for about 2 weeks in small amounts, and I thought nothing of it, as the doctor said I would be fine.
A couple of days later (around 7 weeks) I started bleeding properly (but not a lot at all) … again, I went to urgent care, to be told that I’m still testing pregnant, everything should be fine, and that they have booked me an EMERGENCY internal scan on Monday, which was 5 days away…
I couldn’t rest my mind for 5 days knowing something could be wrong with our baby, I booked a private scan, but as this was only an ultrasound and I was only 7/8 weeks, no baby was found, the sonographer said I might just be too early too see anything but if I am really worried, ring the pregnancy unit, tell them how you’re feeling and they will book you an earlier scan…
I called the next day (still bleeding at this point) and they gave me a 2 hour slot.
During my internal scan, she found the gestational sac, a placenta, but no baby. She said we can’t confirm a miscarriage as of yet, because I actually can’t find a baby, she could see lots of different grape-like cells in my uterus and she couldn’t work out what they were, even with a second opinion of a doctor.
She took some blood tests to check my HCG levels, and with that, I was sent home, she mentioned that it could be ectopic but at this point we just didn’t know.
The day after. I started to feel very faint and dizzy, I didn’t know if it was the anxiety of everything that had happened, but my head was just all over the place, Robbie rang the early pregnancy unit and they said I need to be up there as soon as possible.
They did lots of tests, put me on a drip overnight, and in the morning, a surgeon came in and said I have suffered a Molar pregnancy, this is a very rare occurrence, and It occurs in less than 1 in 700 pregnancies….
– Molar pregnancies are caused by an imbalance in genetic material (chromosomes) in the pregnancy. This usually occurs when an egg that contains no genetic information is fertilised by a sperm (a complete molar pregnancy), or when a normal egg is fertilised by two sperm (a partial molar pregnancy)
I was so scared, the reason I felt so poorly, so sick, low energy, is that my body’s hormone levels were at the level of a 23 week pregnancy, they needed to perform a D&C to remove everything out of my uterus quickly.
They prepared me for surgery within 45 minutes, and the next thing I knew, I was waking up and it was all done.
In most molar pregnancies, any remaining abnormal tissue in the womb usually dies off, But in a small proportion of women, the tissue can remain and grow further into the lining of the womb and, like a cancer, spread to other areas of the body.
I’m having all my results tested at the moment, and having HCG tests done every 2 weeks to make sure there’s none of the molar left inside.
My HCG levels will be checked for a full 6 months. (Meaning I can’t even get pregnant until it’s all over ) hopefully my HCG levels return to normal straight away and I don’t have to have further treatment.
If part of the mole is left inside, this can cause persistent trophoblastic disease.
In very rare cases, the placenta may become cancerous and quickly spread to other parts of the body. (Choriocarcinoma)
I have shared this because I think more women should be aware of this and I will list the symptoms below, as I had all of these and thought nothing of it.
Even if you are in the very early stages of pregnancy, please trust your body, if you feel something isn’t right, get help straight away!
I know the NHS is under stress at the moment but your life is important.
The main symptoms of a molar pregnancy are-
* bleeding or a dark discharge.
* you’re feeling or being sick often (severe morning sickness)
* you think your bump looks bigger than it should for your stage of pregnancy
* you have any other symptoms you’re worried about
We pray that when the time is right, we will successfully be pregnant again, but for the meantime, I need to take care of me x
